Carrier R-454B Heat-Pump Operating Limits
Check two outdoor-temperature limits stated in one Carrier R-454B split-system owner manual, and confirm the exact equipment before applying them.

An operating limit in an owner manual applies to the equipment and mode described there. It is not automatically a performance rating or universal heat-pump cutoff. This page summarizes two temperature boundaries in Carrier owner manual OG-HPR454GEN-02 for a split-system heat pump using R-454B refrigerant. Check the installed model and its current manual before acting; other Carrier products and other refrigerants may have different instructions.
The two limits in this manual
Carrier’s cited manual says the covered outdoor unit is not designed to operate in cooling mode below 55°F (13°C) without modification. If lower-temperature cooling is needed, it directs the owner to consult an authorized dealer. The manual separately says the unit is not designed for heating-mode operation above 66°F (19°C); it states that emergency or auxiliary heat may be operated above that outdoor temperature.
The second statement does not say the system automatically switches to auxiliary heat. Neither statement says what an unrelated Carrier model, another refrigerant, or another manufacturer should do. They also do not determine why a specific system stopped or changed operation.
Confirm that the manual matches your system
Find the model and serial numbers on the equipment rating plate and compare them with the product and refrigerant covered by the owner documentation. The cited manual is Catalog No. OG-HPR454GEN-02, edition date January 2024, for a split-system heat pump using R-454B. If a document or unit label differs, do not apply the limits in this article; ask the dealer to identify the correct manual and operating range.
What to do with an apparent mismatch
If the outdoor temperature is near a stated boundary, check how the system measures or displays the condition and confirm the mode on the controller. Do not modify the unit, change refrigerant, bypass an interlock, or force an operating mode. For cooling below the manual’s boundary, contact an authorized dealer as the manual directs. For a heating question above the stated boundary, ask how the installed system is meant to use emergency or auxiliary heat.
If the heat pump runs but rooms stay cold under other conditions, see the comfort investigation guide. For day-to-day controls, see the thermostat settings guide. These pages do not replace a manual-specific assessment or authorize a modification.
Source and scope
The Carrier owner manual provides the only temperature values in this article. Its limits are for the covered R-454B split-system equipment and the specified operating modes. Confirm the exact unit and current manual before using them; do not generalize the values to all heat pumps or treat them as a diagnosis.
