Heat-Pump Refrigerant Detection Alerts: Check the Exact Model
Refrigerant detection messages and responses differ by product. Compare selected LG, Carrier, and Daikin manual boundaries without treating them as universal instructions.

Some heat pumps have refrigerant detection or mitigation equipment, but the displayed messages and response differ across manufacturers and product families. A general code list cannot tell you what an alert means on a particular system. Check the indoor and outdoor model labels, refrigerant, controller message, and current manual before applying product-specific guidance. Do not open equipment, reset an alert, or change power settings based on another brand’s instructions.
What selected manuals say
| Equipment covered by the cited document | Manual-specific information | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| LG Multi V R32 wall-mounted indoor-unit family in manual MFL71421924 | For codes such as 228, 229, or 230, the manual directs the user to ventilate the room and contact authorized personnel immediately. Code 236 indicates less than six months of detector life remains. | The codes include sensor fault, life-cycle, and leak-related states; an error code does not by itself identify one underlying condition. Confirm the exact unit family and manual. |
| Carrier split-system heat pump using R-454B covered by owner manual OG-HPR454GEN-02 | The manual describes an automatic dissipation response: the outdoor unit and supplementary heat turn off and the indoor blower turns on when a leak is detected. | This manual does not establish the same alert code or owner response for every Carrier or R-454B system. |
| Daikin R-32 equipment families listed in service manual RS6200301 | The manual says not to open the unit or turn it off if an R-32 leak alarm is observed. It describes an automatic thermostat, blower, and electric-heater response. | It is a technical service manual, not a general owner procedure; its LED pattern descriptions conflict, so do not use the blink pattern here to diagnose the alert. |
Keep the response model-specific
The LG instructions above apply only to the covered Multi V indoor-unit family. The listed codes do not all mean a confirmed leak: the manual also identifies detector malfunction and detector-life states. The Carrier manual describes its equipment response, but this summary does not provide a reset or repair procedure. The Daikin manual covers named R-32 families and expressly says not to open or turn off the unit when an R-32 leak alarm is observed; a conflicting LED description means its blinking pattern should not be used as a homeowner interpretation.
If your equipment is not one of these covered models, do not borrow a response from the table. Use the exact current owner documentation and contact the manufacturer or authorized service provider. If the message is persistent, copy it exactly and give the technician the model numbers, refrigerant label, time, and any system behavior you observed without approaching or opening equipment.
What this guide does not establish
These manuals do not create one universal action for all R-32, R-454B, A2L, or heat-pump detection systems. This page does not diagnose a leak, interpret an unlisted code, provide exposure measurements, or give a generic evacuation or restart instruction. The Daikin service manual’s conflicting LED entries remain unresolved; the LG and Carrier instructions do not settle that conflict or apply to another product family.
For non-alert care, use the general homeowner maintenance checklist. Keep the exact manual and service contact accessible, and have qualified personnel handle sensor replacement, system access, refrigerant work, and fault investigation.
Sources and applicability
The LG installation manual, Carrier owner manual, and Daikin service manual RS6200301 are primary manufacturer documents. Each applies only to the equipment it names and its applicable revision. Confirm the installed model and current instructions before acting.
