Scotland Heat Pump Grants and Loans

Compare the Home Energy Scotland grant-and-loan route with the separate Warmer Homes assessment before planning a Scottish heat-pump project.

Scotland has more than one household-support route, and they answer different questions. Home Energy Scotland’s Grant and Loan is for eligible owner-occupiers planning specified improvements. Warmer Homes Scotland is an assessment-led route for households in or at risk of fuel poverty. Neither page gives an automatic award or decides what system suits one house.

Home Energy Scotland sequence from eligibility to written offer, installation, and claim

Home Energy Scotland: wait for the written offer

The current Home Energy Scotland terms, checked 29 October 2026, publish heat-pump grants of up to £7,500, with a rural or island uplift that can raise the maximum to £9,000. The remainder of eligible funding may be available as an optional interest-free loan. These are ceilings, not a promise of funding: the scheme says budget is limited and funding is reserved when a written offer is issued, not when an application is submitted.

The terms describe support for eligible owner-occupiers using the property as their only or principal residence in Scotland. A hybrid heat pump is not eligible under this route, and grant funding is not available for a replacement heat pump. Certified installer, qualifying-product, and project-permission conditions apply. Check the current terms and your postcode before relying on a figure or assuming the project qualifies.

Do not start work before you have the written funding offer. After the installation, the terms require a post-installation Energy Performance Certificate with the claim. The safe sequence is to confirm eligibility, prepare the documents and quote, apply, wait for the offer, complete approved work, and then submit the completion claim.

Home Energy Scotland funding contrasted with the separate household assessment route

Warmer Homes Scotland is a different assessment

The Scottish Government describes Warmer Homes Scotland as a route for households in or at risk of fuel poverty. Its page says clean heating is offered first where technically suitable, but an emissions-producing system may be offered if clean heat would increase the household’s energy bills. Most participating homes also receive energy-saving improvements. This is a program decision boundary, not a household eligibility result or a heat-pump guarantee.

Ask Home Energy Scotland which route fits your circumstances and whether any support can be combined. Do not treat a Home Energy Scotland grant ceiling, a Warmer Homes assessment, a local-authority offer, and a UK-wide scheme as one fund. Check the current administrator instructions, product and installer conditions, property permissions, and remaining budget before committing.
